“My name is Nargis and I’m 23 years old and I came to the United States on June 7th of 2023. So in Kabul I lived with my family in an apartment…it was really crowded. There was a lot of noise, a lot of people and less security, especially for girls during the nighttime. Like after 6 o’clock, we’re not going out anywhere! But I got a scholarship, so I moved to Tajikistan in 2020. I just left family and everything, but every summer I was going back and forth to visit my family during the summer break. A week before Kabul collapsed, I went back to Tajikistan, so from Tajikistan I just came straight to United States.”
Regarding her goals Nargis shared, “I am an ambitious girl! I have big dreams. So I just graduated from my bachelor’s in cinema and media. I’m hoping to work in my industry. I would like to help others who have talent but not the opportunity to grow like as an actor or filmmaker or anything like that. Make an opportunity or something for them to grow or learn. Make courses for them for free or make an agency so they can grow their talent. So that is my goal for them.”
CWS asked Nargis about the differences between her life in Afghanistan and life in the US. Nargis said, “I could not see myself grow there. It was really hard and challenging especially for women to grow there. For us it was mostly like we should have gone to another county where we were have more opportunities. But here I can see myself like grow in a couple of years. I see that. In Afghanistan we were limited and we all afraid like oh that might like be forcefully get married if we don’t be successful or something. But like in here I’m like in peace and I can work on my goals and stuff. I can see potential to be successful in here.” She summarized, “I think for me home is more like somewhere we could feel peace more in it.”
